The sisters are careful to only buy what they need. In this way, they make sure to have lovely finds in the home, which can be used for a long time. “When you have had something for quite a while, a little renewal may be just in place,†Anna smiles while she sews curtains to refresh the old display cabinet.
Take the doors and possibly also the shelves out of your display cabinet.
Measure the curtain. Measure along the glass of the display cabinet and leave a couple of extra centimetres at both the top and bottom, so the curtain’s tunnel hem will not be visible from the outside. Add another 2 centimetres at the top and bottom, so you have room to make the tunnel. Cut this and take advantage of the length of the patchwork fabric, so you have more length to make wrinkles along the sides.
First, make the sides of the curtain nice by making a fold of 1 centimetre twice and sewing along the short sides. Iron the patchwork fabric at the fold, as this will make it easier to control the fabric when sewing with the sewing machine. Now, sew a tunnel by the same method, but this time along the long side.
Now, you have made an open tunnel in each side of the curtain. Use a safety pin to lead the jute string through the tunnels. It can be helpful to cut the jute string twice as long as the distance between the screws which you will screw into the cabinet door. Then you are sure to have enough string to tighten the curtain with when this is attached.
Screw small screws into each side of the cabinet door. Make sure to place the screws a bit under the frame of the cabinet door in order to be able to fit the curtain nicely and so the tunnel is not visible from the outside. Make sure that the screws do not sit directly on the cabinet’s frame when the door is closed.
Place the curtain on the cabinet door and tie the jute string from one of the sides around the screws. Tighten it well while you also tie a knot. Cut the ends off the string.
Spread the curtain on the string, so it makes nice wrinkles and covers the glass.
You can also cover the inside of the cabinet with gift-wrapping paper, so a lovely colour could peek out, if you chose to pull the curtain a bit to the side. Here, it would be a good idea to use spraying glue or double-sided adhesive tape and make sure to measure the cabinet and cut out separate squares of paper for each part of the cabinet’s inside before placing the paper. If you use spraying glue, remember to cover the parts which should not be glued.
