4 festive ways to decorate branches
Decorated birch branches, or 'fastelavnsris' as they are called in Denmark, are a festive, Danish tradition, the sisters think. They adorn the homes around the time of the Danish carnival 'fastelavn', and decorating them together is quite cosy. Here are four different ways to decorate branches to bring joy to children and adults alike.
January 2023
The children's favourite.
Let the children be creative with colours and materials, and hang a few sweet treats on some of the branches.
Decorations.
On the child-friendly 'fastelavnsris', little ornaments of various materials hang alongside of candy. "Use plenty of colour," Anna suggests.
Children's art.
Cats are a traditional Danish 'fastelavn' motif. Cut cats from children's drawings and paintings using the sisters' template which you will find further below. You can also let the child cut abstract shapes if cutting at the lines of the template is too difficult.
Sweet beads.
Beads are perfect for little branch ornaments.

Simple and colourful.
You can easily combine delicate colours with a simple look. Paint the branches gold for an extra festive touch.
Decorations.
Little pennant garlands, colourful cats and felt balls adorn the beautiful golden branches.
You will need.
For the decorated branches, you will need felt balls, cardboard, some nice and sharp small scissors, gold paint, paintbrush, glue gun, and cotton yarn. You will find the link for the cat template further below.
Berry branches.
When the gold paint has dried, you can glue on felt balls as little quirky, colourful berries.
Festive flags.
Make little pennant garlands with cardboard, yarn, and glue gun.
Even small scraps of beautiful cardboard and paper can be transformed into ornaments for the branches.

Never throw something away that you might be able to use again.
ANNA
Trendy and colourful.
A fun, modern version of the classic 'fastelavnsris'.
You will need.
Here, you will need simple branches, paint, paintbrush, yarn, crepe paper candies, scissors, and a cardboard cat.
Yarn branches.
Paint the branches, and let the paint dry. Then, wrap yarn around the branches and seal the ends with a needle.
Sugar sweet pastels.
Make delicate little candies from crepe paper to match the colourful branches perfectly. You can also hang real candy in pastel-coloured wrapping on the branches.
Romantic and subdued.
An aesthetic and marvellous version of the classic Danish carnival tradition.
Warm colours.
Cut the cats from pink cardstock, and make the other ornaments for the branches in beautiful warm shades too.
You will need.
For this version, you will need cardboard, pipe cleaners, ribbon, and silk paper.
Reuse.
If you have decorations left over from New Year's, you can easily turn them into decorations for the branches. Simply cut off the stick from the rosette and add a string or a piece of ribbon for hanging.
Silk paper pom pom.
Fold the pom pom flower from silk paper like shown in the photo. Tie the folded paper together in the middle with a string, and spread out the delicate paper leaves.
