Air-dry clay pumpkins
Welcome autumn into your home with a homemade pumpkin made of air-dry clay. "It is quite easy," says Anna, who delights in the changing seasons.
Shape a ball of clay to the desired size. In the video, Anna has used approximately half a pack of the air-dry clay. Smooth out larger lines and cracks. Smaller fissures will be smoothed out later.
Cut a piece of jute twine to a length of approximately 30 cm, and tighten the string across the clay ball, creating an indentation in the ball. Repeat twice more to achieve a star of indentations.
Use a clay tool to expand and round out the indentations and bumps, so you achieve a lifelike shape on your pumpkin.
Smooth the surface of the clay with water wherever there are irregularities. This is best done with a sponge on the large areas and a brush in the recesses. The water also helps prevent the clay from cracking during drying. "Not all pumpkins have a smooth surface," Anna remarks. "Feel free to play with the expression by creating small dots or bumps on the surface using different tools."
Make a hole in the top of the pumpkin, where the stem will be placed, maybe using the end of a paintbrush, which you slightly moisten first. Shape a stem from air-dry clay, and attach it to the pumpkin.
When your pumpkin has the desired shape, allow it to dry for a few days. Please note that a large pumpkin requires a longer time to dry.
Once the pumpkin is dry, it can be painted in your desired colours. Feel free to play with shadows or darker spots for a realistic effect.
When the paint is dry, apply a final coat of glossy or matte varnish, and your pumpkin is ready to adorn your autumn home.
