Crochet Christmas decoration
Spend the chilly months crocheting your own Christmas gift decorations, like this adorable sprig of holly - perfect for tying onto a gift with a silk ribbon. "The wrapping is half the gift," Clara believes.
How to crochet a holly leaf: Cast on 9 chain stitches (ch). Turn and skip the first ch and work 1 double crochet (dc), 1 half treble crochet (htr), 2 treble crochets (tr) into the same stitch (st), 1 double treble crochet (dtr), 2 dtr into the same st, 1 dtr, 1 tr. Leaf tip: (2 htr, 2 ch and 2 htr into the same st). Crochet around the yarn tail along the other half of the leaf to weave it into the work. 1 tr, 1 dtr, 2 dtr into the same st, 1 dtr, 2 tr into the same st, 1 htr, 1 dc, 6 ch, turn and skip the first ch, and work 5 slip stitches (ss). Continue around the leaf edge as follows: 2 dc, 3 ch, 1 dc into the first ch, 3 dc, 3 ch, 1 dc into the first ch, 3 dc, 3 ch, 1 dc into the first ch, 4 dc, 3 ch, 1 dc into the first ch. You have now worked half a leaf edge including the leaf tip. Continue working on the other side: 4 dc, 3 ch, 1 dc into the first ch, 3 dc, 3 ch, 1 dc into the first dc, 3 dc, 3 ch, 1 dc into the first ch, 2 dc. Cut the yarn leaving a 10 cm yarn tail. Pull it through sts. You can use the yarn tail to sew several leaves together. We made 3 leaves, but you can make as many as you wish.
Berries: Using Col 2, make a magic circle. Work 7 dc into the ring. Pull the ring taut, make a long loop and cut the yarn (make sure the yarn tail is long enough to sew the berry to the leaves). Thread the one strand onto a darning needle and tack through the top dc-loop 7 times in all. Pull the yarn taut and backwards to form the berry. Now using both yarn tails, attach the holly berries to a leaf. Make as many berries as you wish.
Sew the berries onto the leaves and sew the leaves together at the stems. Now make chain stitch bands from the back of the leaves to the desired length. Make them short if you wish to tie them onto a ribbon, or long if you wish to tie them around a Christmas gift.
