Crocheted bucket hat with granny squares
For the sunny days, Clara has crocheted a sweet and summery bucket hat with granny squares, which not only provides comfortable shade but also brings beautiful colours to any outfit. “Perfect for summer's outdoor events, beach trips, and picnics," Clara smiles.
Using Col 1, make a magic circle. Round (rd) 1: 1 chain stitch (ch), 6 double crochet (dc). At end of rd, work 1 slip stitch (ss) into the first ch. Note that the chain stitch does not count as a stitch (st) here or throughout the pattern. Rd 2: 1 ch, 2 dc into each st. At end of rd, work 1 ss into the first ch = 12 sts. Rd 3: 1 ch, *1 dc, 2 dc into next st*, repeat from * to * 6 times in all. At end of rd, work 1 ss into the first ch = 18 sts. Rd 4: 1 ch, *1 dc into each of the next 2 sts, 2 dc into the next st*, repeat from * to * 6 times in all. At end of rd, work 1 ss into the first ch = 24 sts. Continue to increase (inc) 6 times in each rd, increasing 1 dc each time you increase. Crochet 15 rds in all = 90 sts in the rd. Change colours as follows: Rds 1-3: Col 1. Rds 4-5: Col 2. Rds 6-8: Col 3. Rds 9-10: Col 4. Rds 11-13: Col 5. Rds 14-15: Col 1.
Crochet 6 Granny squares. Change colour in each rd of the square. Mix the colours as you wish. Make a magic circle in any colour you wish. Round (rd) 1: 3 ch, 2 treble crochet (tr) in the circle, 2 ch, *3 tr in the circle, 2 ch*, repeat from * to * 3 times in all (= 4 groups of 3 tr). At end of rd, work 1 slip stitch (ss) into the third ch from hook, pull the yarn taut. Change colour. Rd 2: 3 ch, 2 tr, 2 ch, 3 tr into the same chain stitch arch (= corner arch), *3 tr, 2 ch, 3 tr into the next chain stitch arch*, repeat from * to * 3 times in all (= 3 corners). At end of rd, work 1 ss into the third ch from hook (= 4 corners). Change colour. Rd 3: 3 ch, 2 tr, 2 ch, 3 tr into the same chain stitch arch (= corner arch), *3 tr into the next chain stitch arch, 3 tr, 2 ch, 3 tr into the corner arch*, repeat from * to * 3 times in all, 2 tr into the next chain stitch arch. At end of rd, work 1 ss into the third ch from hook. Change color. Rd 4: Work precisely as rd 3 (rd increases by 1 tr group between each corner) except on the last side of the square. Here, you omit the ch sts between the tr so that the hat tapers slightly to follow the shape of the head.
Join the Granny squares using slip stitches: Start by crocheting the 4th side (the side without ch) onto the crown. Then crochet the remaining sides together. Join the Granny squares using slip stitches as follows: Place 2 Granny squares together, wrong sides facing. Insert the crochet hook into the back loop of the first st in each square (these 2 stitch loops face each other). Wrap yarn over hook and pull it through both loops. Wrap the yarn over the hook again and pull through = 1 ss. Insert the hook into the next 2 loops facing each other and pull the yarn through these loops. Pull the yarn through the loops on the hook = 1 ss. Continue until all stitch loops are crocheted together.
Brim: Using Col 1, work 2 rds of dc along the bottom edge of the 6 Granny squares = approx. 120 dc. Continue without increasing. Work colour stripes as follows: 1 rd with Col 3. 3 rds with Col 5. 2 rds with Col 2. 1 rd with Col 1. 2 rds with Col 4. Continue inc as follows: Rd 1: 1 ch, *11 dc, 2 dc into 12th dc*, repeat from * to * 10 times in all, 1 ss into the first ch. Rd 2: 1 ch, *5 dc, 2 dc into 6th dc, 11 dc, 2 dc into 12th dc*, repeat from * to *, work 1 ss into first ch. Repeat these 5 rds 3 times in all. In rd 2, switch to Col 3, in rd 4, switch to Col 2 and in rd 5, switch to Col 5. Now switch to Col 1 and work 3 rds without inc. End with 1 rd of ss. Break off the yarn and pull it through the loop. Weave in ends.
