Crocheted tablet cover
The sisters make a virtue of rediscovering old projects and techniques and executing them anew, such as this quirky tablet cover with granny squares. "Pretty and practical at the same time," Clara finds. "And with the opportunity to add your own personal touch or make use of yarn scraps," Anna adds.
Start by making a magic circle (use any colour you wish). Round (rd) 1: 3 chain stitches (ch), 2 treble crochet (tr) in the circle, 2 ch, *3 tr in the circle, 2 ch*, repeat from * to * 3 times in all (= 4 groups of 3 tr). At end of rd, work 1 slip stitch (ss) into the third ch from hook, pull the yarn taut. Change colour. Rd 2: 3 ch, 2 tr, 2 ch, 3 tr into the same chain stitch arch (= corner arch), *3 tr, 2 ch, 3 tr into the next chain stitch arch *, repeat from * to * 3 times in all (= 3 corners). At end of rd, work 1 ss into the third ch from hook (= 4 corners). The small Granny squares consist of these 2 rds only and measure approx. 4.5 x 4.5 cm. For the large Granny squares, work 2 more rds. Change colour. Rd 3: 3 ch, 2 tr, 2 ch, 3 tr into the same chain stitch arch (= corner arch), *3 tr into the next chain stitch arch, 3 tr, 2 ch, 3 tr into the corner arch*, repeat from * to * 3 times in all, 2 tr into the next chain stitch arch. At end of rd, work 1 ss into the third ch from hook. Change colour. Rd 4: Work precisely as rd 3 (rd increases by 1 tr group between each corner). The large Granny squares consist of these 4 rds and measure approx. 9.5 x 9.5 cm.
Join the Granny squares using slip stitches as follows: Place 2 Granny squares together, wrong sides facing. Insert the crochet hook into the back loop of the first st in each square (these 2 stitch loops face each other). Wrap yarn over hook and pull it through both loops. Wrap the yarn over the hook again and pull through = 1 ss. Insert the hook into the next 2 loops facing each other and pull the yarn through these loops. Pull the yarn through the loops on the hook = 1 ss. Continue until all stitch loops are crocheted together. To finish, break off yarn and pull through. To continue, proceed with the next pair of Granny squares (remember to place them wrong sides facing). If you wish, you can start crocheting your squares together horizontally and then vertically. Weave in any ends that you do not crochet in along the way.
Arranging the squares: Lay 6 large Granny squares in the centre. There are 3 squares on the front and 3 on the back of the cover, placed longitudinally. Then, on each side of the large Granny squares, attach 6 small squares, both front and back. The cover straps are of different lengths: The short strap consists of 6 Granny squares and the long one of 8 Granny squares. Crochet the straps together horizontally with an ss edge worked along the sides. You can pull the short strap down over the long one to secure the iPad inside the cover.
Sew in cover lining. First measure your cover, as your tension may be tighter or looser than that stated in the pattern. The cover should measure approx. 18 x 27 cm + 1 cm seam allowance. If the lining has a pattern, you may want to lay it double, so that it is visible through the Granny squares. Sew the base and sides together by hand or using a sewing machine. For the straps: 30 x 5 cm + 1 cm seam allowance (short), 40 x 5 cm + 1 cm seam allowance (long). Sew the lining onto the back of the straps by hand. Put the stitched lining inside the cover. Attach the lining by sewing along the inside of the top edge of the cover and over the straps.
