Gingerbread house

Can you think of something more Christmassy than a gingerbread house? Gather your loved ones for an afternoon with baking and hygge, and let the warm scent of cinnamon and ginger take you back to the Christmases of your childhood.

Begin by printing the stencil for the gingerbread house. You can find the stencil here. Cut out the different parts and set aside.

Put butter and brown sugar in a bowl and whisk it together until light and fluffy.

Add light syrup, flour, ground ginger, ground cinnamon and baking soda to the bowl and mix until homogeneous.

Part the dough in two and roll out each part between to pieces of baking paper until they are around 4 mm thick. Put it in the frigde for 40 minutes.

When the dough has been refrigerated for 40 minutes, turn on the oven to 160°C / 320°F.

Place all the stencils on the dough and carefully cut them out with a little knife. Wait with cutting out the windows until the house parts are placed on the baking tray. If you can't make room for all the stencils at first, use the left over dough for cutting out the rest.

Bake the gingerbread pieces in the oven for about 8 minutes, until they are golden brown, and let them cool down on a cooling rack or oven shelf.

Meanwhile, prepare the icing by whisking icing sugar and egg whites with a hand mixer, until the icing is smooth. You can add a little water, if it is too thick, but be careful not to make it too thin.

Pour the icing into an icing bag with a 3 mm icing nozzle, let your imagination flow, and decorate all the parts for the house. Let the icing dry completely.

Assemble all the walls for the house with icing and let it dry for 10-15 min. Afterwards, assemble the roof and the chimney and add to the house. Let the icing dry for a minimum of 30 minutes, before the house can be moved around.

Tip: If you want to decorate the gingerbread house further, you can use gelatin sheets as window panes or sprinkle a bit of icing sugar over the house as snow.
