Knit a tote bag with tie-dye effect
Anna is fascinated by the colour pattern that come from tie-dye colouring. For this reason, she decided to recreate the effect in knitting. Do like Anna, and knit a unique tote bag.
Using knitting needle(s) size 8.0 mm and 1 strand of Anna and Clara’s ribbon yarn Col 1, 1 strand of Anna and Clara’s cotton yarn Col 3 and 1 strand of Anna and Clara’s jute twine Col 6, cast on 30 sts. Work back and forth on the needle(s).
Row 1: k1, set a stitch marker (ssm), k13, ssm, k2, ssm, k13, ssm, k1 (Right Side).
Row 2: k30, move stitch markers to the next needle (Wrong Side).
Row 3: k1, increase 1 by working purlwise through the back loop (tbl), k13, k1 tbl, ssm, k2, ssm, k1 tbl, k13, k1 tbl, ssm, k1.
Row 4: k to end.
Continue increasing in alternate rows 8 times more = 66 sts. This forms the base of the bag.
Continue working back and forth on the needle(s). Start working the wave pattern with drop stitches: Rows 1 and 2: k to end. Row 3: k6, * yarn over needle (yon) twice, k1, yon 3 times, k1, yon 4 times, k1, yon 3 times, k1, yon twice, k6 *. Repeat from * to * to end. Row 4: Work k allowing all the yarn overs to drop. Rows 5 and 6: k to end. Row 7: k1, * yon twice, k1, yon 3 times, k1, yon 4 times, k1, yon 3 times, k1, yon twice, k6 *. Repeat from * to * until last 5 sts in row: yon twice k1, yon 3 times, k1, yon 4 times, k1, yon 3 times, k1, yon twice, k1. Row 8: As Row 4. Repeat these 8 rows.
Work 16 rows of the wave pattern, after which you replace Anna and Clara’s jute twine Col 6 with Anna and Clara’s jute twine Col 7. Work 8 rows of the wave pattern.
Replace Anna and Clara’s cotton yarn in Col 3 with Anna and Clara’s cotton yarn Col 4. Work 4 rows of the wave pattern.
Replace Anne and Clara’s ribbon yarn Col 1 with Anna and Clara’s ribbon yarn Col 2. Work 12 rows of the wave pattern.
Replace Anna and Clara’s ribbon yarn Col 2 with Anna and Clara’s cotton yarn Col 5. Work 4 rows of the wave pattern.
Work the top edge using 6 strands: 2 strands of Anna and Clara’s jute twine Col 7, 2 strands of Anna and Clara’s cotton yarn Col 5 and 2 strands of Anna and Clara’s ribbon yarn Col 2. This makes the edge firmer. Work 6 rows of garter stitch (k to end). Cast off firmly.
Weave in ends. Sew bag sides and base.
Using punch pliers, make 4 holes at both ends of the leather strap at a distance of 1.5 and 3.5 cm from the ends. Sew the strap firmly to the sides of the bag as shown in the photo.

Anna and Clara’s ribbon yarn, 2 balls (each 50 g/185 m). Col 1: 1 ball. (509417-002 – Aluminium). Col 2: 1 ball. (509417-001 – Hazelnut).

Anna and Clara’s cotton yarn, 2 balls (each 50 g/160 m). Col 3: 1 ball. (16-1107 – Aluminium). Col 4: 1 ball. (14-1315 – Hazelnut). Possibly Col 5: a remnant (11-0701 – Whisper White).

Anna and Clara’s jute twine, 2 balls (each 50 g/35 m). Col 6: 1 ball. (18-1108 – Aluminium). Col 7: 1 ball. (14-1315 – Hazelnut).

1 leather strap measuring 2 x 100 x 0.2 cm.

Straight knitting needles or circular knitting needle size 8.0 mm.
