Knitted cardigan in brioche stitch
On cold days, there is nothing better than wrapping oneself in soft and fluffy homemade knitwear. Anna is especially fond of this beautiful wool cardigan with a loose fit and balloon sleeves that both warms and falls beautifully.
Using circular knitting needle size 10.0 mm and 2 strands (1 strand of Anna and Clara’s wool yarn and 1 strand of Anna and Clara’s mohair nylon yarn), cast on 95 stitches (sts). NB: The cardigan is knitted with 2 strands throughout. Work 10 rows (rs) of garter stitch. Work back and forth (= 5 garter stitch ridges).
Continue in Brioche stitch as follows: Work back and forth on needle. K first and last st on each r (edge st). Row 1: 1 edge st, * k1, yarn over (yon), slip 1 st (sl1) purlwise *. Work from * - * until 2 sts remain (rem), k1,1 edge st. Row 2: 1 edge st, * yon, sl1 purlwise, knit 2 together (k2tog) (i.e. into yon and slipped st from previous row) *. Repeat from * - * until 2 sts rem. End r with yon, sl1 purlwise, 1 edge st. Row 3: 1 edge st, * k2tog (i.e. yon and slipped st from previous r), yon, sl1 purlwise*. Repeat from * - * until 1 yon and 2 sts rem, k2tog (i.e. yon and slipped st from previous r), 1 edge st. Repeat rs 2 and 3.
When the work measures 42 cm, slide 47 sts (back) onto a stitch holder. Continue working across right front = 24 sts in Brioche stitch with 1 edge st on each side. Slide the rem 71 sts onto a spare needle or stitch holder. Neck shaping: When the armhole measures 12 cm, cast off at the neckline for 4 sts in alternate rows, 3 times in all. Continue working across the 12 rem sts until the armhole measures 23 cm. Work 1 edge st on each side. Cast off in k1, p1 rib. Work left front in the same way, but reverse the shaping
Work Brioche stitch across the rem 47 sts with 1 edge st on each side. Continue until back measures 23 cm from the armhole. Shoulder shaping: Cast off 12 sts (right shoulder). Work Brioche stitch across 23 sts (neck) and cast off 12 sts (left shoulder).
Using circular knitting needle size 10.0 mm, work 10 rs of garter stitch. Work back and forth (5 garter stitch ridges). In last r, inc 1 in each st (= 44 sts). Now work Brioche stitch with 1 edge st on each side until sleeve measures 45 cm or desired length. Cast off 16 sts. Work Brioche stitch to end. Cast off 16 sts. Work Brioche stitch across rem 12 sts with 1 edge st on each side (15 cm). This is the shoulder saddle. Leave sts on needle. Work a second identical sleeve.
Sew the saddle pieces together at the shoulder seams on front and back, respectively. Sew sleeves into armholes at front and back, respectively. Sew the underarm seams.
Slip sts from shoulder saddles onto circular knitting needle size 10.0 mm on each side of the back. Pick up 19 sts along the right front, k across right saddle, back and left saddle, pick up 19 sts along the left front, cast on 5 sts (wrap yarn over the needle) for buttonhole slit. You may omit the buttonhole slit if you want to make an open cardigan. There are now 90 sts on the needle. Work 4 rs: k to end. At the end of the 4th row, cast off for buttonhole over 4th and 3rd last sts, k2. Turn and k2, cast on (wrap) 2 sts, k to end. Work 10 rs of garter stitch (5 garter stitch ridges). Cast off firmly. Sew button at opposite side of neck edge. Weave in ends.
