Knitted cardigan with granny squares

The cardigan is made of crocheted granny squares with a circle at the centre, using 2 strands of yarn: 1 strand of Anna and Clara's wool/wool tweed yarn and 1 strand of Anna and Clara's mohair nylon yarn. You can mix the colours given in the pattern as you wish or you can use leftover yarn. The sleeves and borders are knitted with 2 strands of Anna and Clara's mohair yarn. You can use the same pattern to make a waistcoat. Omit the sleeves and, if necessary, border the armhole edges like the front edges.

Crochet 34 granny squares in the colours of your choice using 1 strand of Anna and Clara's wool yarn/wool tweed yarn and 1 strand of Anna and Clara's mohair nylon yarn and crochet hook size 8.0 mm. Round (rd) 1: Work in the round (rd): Make a magic ring, work 3 chain stitches (ch) (counts as 1 treble crochet (tr) and is repeated in each round), 11 tr, join the ring with 1 slip stitch (ss) in the 3rd ch (repeat at the end of each round) = 12 tr. Change colour. Rd 2: Work 3 ch, 1 tr in the same st as ss, *1 ch, 2 tr between each tr*, repeat from * to * to end of rd, 1 ch, join rd with 1 ss into the 3rd ch = 24 tr. Change colour. Rd 3: Work 3 ch, 2 tr in the same st as ss, *1 ch, 3 tr in each ch*, repeat from * to * to end of rd, 1 ch, join rd with 1 ss into the 3rd ch = 36 tr. Change colour. Rd 4: To shape the square: Work 3 ch, 2 tr in the same st as ss, 1 ch, 3 tr in the same chain arch (= corner arch), *1 ch, 3 tr in the next ch, 1 ch, 3 tr in the next ch, 1 ch, 3 tr, 1 ch, 3 tr in the same chain arch (corner arch)*, repeat from * to * a total of 3 times, 1 ch, 3 tr in the next ch, 1 ch, 3 tr in the next ch, 1 ch, join rd with 1 ss in the 3rd ch = 48 tr.

Crochet the squares together with ss, using 1 strand of Col 1 and 1 strand of Col 6. There are 8 squares in each front, 16 in the back and 1 square over each shoulder. The back and fronts are crocheted together working from the bottom edge across 2½ granny squares and ending approx. 36 cm up. This is where the armhole starts. How to do this: Place 2 granny squares together, wrong sides facing. Insert the crochet hook into the back loop of the first st in each square (these 2 stitch loops face each other). Wrap yarn over hook and pull it through both loops. Wrap the yarn over the hook again and pull through = 1 ch. Insert the hook into the next 2 loops facing each other and pull the yarn through these loops. Pull the yarn through the loops on the hook = 1 ss. Continue until all stitch loops are crocheted together.

Front edge: Using circular needle size 8.0 mm and 2 strands of Col 6, pick up 67 sts along one front edge. Work 4 rows (rs) in stocking stitch (knit (k) on the right side (RS) and purl (p) on the wrong side (WS)). Cast off from the WS. This causes the edge to roll. Roll the edge from p to r. Sew firmly on the RS. Make an identical border on the other front.

Neck edge: Using circular needle size 8.0 mm and 2 strands of Col 6, pick up 109 sts around the neck, including 2 sts from each front edge and 1 st in the join between 2 squares. Row (r) 1: p to end of r. R 2: Knit 2 together (k2tog) at each shoulder corner, 4 times in all. Repeat these 2 rs 6 times in all = 97 sts. Cast off from the WS; Take care to cast off loosely. Sew the edge firmly in place from the RS (as on the fronts).

Sleeves: Using a circular needle size 8.0 mm and 2 strands of Col 6, cast on 72 sts. Work in the rd. In every 8th rd, decrease 1 st on each side after the first and before the last st in the rd, a total of 9 times = 54 sts remaining. In the next rd, *k2tog, k1*, repeat from * to * to end of rd. Work 4 rds. Cast off in p. Roll the edge from p to k. Sew firmly in place from the RS. Sew the sleeve into the armhole. Work a second sleeve identical with the first. Weave in ends.
