Knitted chair cover
Do as Anna, and renew your favorite chair with a lovely home-knitted chair cover. "Not only does it add wonderful personality to the living room, but it is also comfortable to sit on," Anna explains.
The cover is worked using three strands of yarn and double moss stitch, except for two edge stitches which are knitted in stocking stitch. You can either work with the colours and yarns described in the pattern or use yarn leftovers if you wish. The cover fits Søstrene Grene’s ‘Clara’ chair.
Using circular knitting needle size 5 mm and Col 1, Col 7 and Col 8, cast on 52 stitches (sts). Work 2 rounds (rds): knit (k) to end. Set a stitch marker (ssm) at the start of the rd and after the 26th st. Now work double moss stitch and knit 2 sts on each side of the back of the chair as follows:
Rds 1 and 2: k1, *k1, purl (p) 1*, repeat from * to * 12 times, k1, ssm, k1, repeat from * to * 12 times, k1, ssm. Rds 3 and 4: k1, *p1, k1*, repeat from * to * 12 times, k1, ssm, k1, repeat from * to * 12 times, k1, ssm.
Continue working these 4 rds. At the same time, increase (inc) in the first rd as follows: Knit 1 through back loop (i.e. the loop between the knit stitches on the side seam and the double moss stitch pattern) = inc 4 sts each time you work rd 1. Make sure that the double moss stitch pattern repeat is correct.
Work k over p in the previous rd, and vice versa. Continue to inc a total of 14 times = 108 sts. Work the last 11 cm of the chair back without inc.
Switch from Col 1 to Col 2 when the work measures 16 cm. Switch from Col 8 to Col 9 when the work measures 22 cm. Switch from Col 2 to Col 3 when the work measures 31 cm. Switch from Col 3 to Col 4 when the work measures 42 cm.
When the last pattern sequence is completed, divide the work into two halves and knit each half separately. First, work the chair back fold over 54 sts. Slide the remaining 54 sts onto a stitch holder.
Work 4 pattern sequences back and forth on the needle using three strands of yarn (one strand each of Col 4, Col 7 and Col 9. k2 at the start and end of the r. In alternate rs, decrease (dec) 1 st on each side after and before the two edge stitches. Once you have worked four pattern sequences, cast off, leaving 4 sts at the start and end of the r on a needle (for the i-cord).
Row (r) 1 (Right Side (RS)): Slide 4 sts onto a double-pointed knitting needle: k to end. Row 2 (Wrong Side (WS)): Slide all the sts to the opposite end of the needle (i.e. do not turn the work). Row 3: Bring the yarn to the back of the work. Row 4: k4, pull the yarn taut after the 2nd st. Continue until the i-cord measures 17 cm. Knit i-cord over the 4 sts on the other side.
Knit a 27 cm chair seat over the remaining 54 sts, incl. 2 knit stitches on each side and change colour as follows:
Start with Col 4, Col 7 and Col 9. Switch from Col 9 to Col 10 when the work measures 8 cm. Switch from Col 4 to Col 5 when the work measures 15 cm. Switch from Col 10 to Col 9 when the work measures 25 cm. Knit 2 cm. Then in every 4th r, dec 1 st on each side after and before the 2 edge stitches.
Switch from Col 5 to Col 6 when the work measures 30 cm. Continue until the work measures 35 cm incl. dec. Work one r (k to end) and then one r (p to end). The chair seat is now complete. Now make a fold at the front of the chair (4 cm incl. dec). Slide 4 sts onto a stitch holder at each side of the fold. Cast off remaining sts. Make 2 i cords.
Pick up about 35 sts along one edge of the chair seat. Work 2 pattern sequences with 2 knit stitches on each side and 2 dec at the end closest to the chair back. Slide 4 sts at each end onto a stitch holder. Cast off the remaining sts. Make 2 i-cords. Knit a fold along the opposite side of the chair seat. Weave in ends.
