Knitted patchwork beanie

The beanie is knitted back and forth on the needles, following a chart and in a rectangle. The rectangle is then sewn together along one side to form the top of the beanie. Work with one strand of wool yarn or wool tweed yarn and one strand of mohair nylon yarn.

You will need about 25 g of each colour, so you can knit beanies for everyone in your family using leftover yarn.

Using circular knitting needle size 6 mm and two strands (one strand of wool yarn, Col 1, and one strand of mohair nylon yarn, Col 7), cast on 28 stitches (sts). You work with the strand of mohair nylon throughout, including through colour changes. This strand is not shown in the chart.

Row (r) 1 (Right Side (RS)): Slip 1 st purlwise, knit (k) 7, k5 with Col 2, k6 with Col 3 and k9 with Col 4. In this and all following RS rs: slip the first st purlwise, k to end.

Row 2 (Wrong Side (WS)): In this and all following WS rs: p to last 6 sts, k to end. Work colour changes as shown in the chart.

To prevent holes, twist the strands when you change colour. If you wish, you can weave in ends as you work instead of weaving them in when you have finished knitting.

The garter stitch ridges form the brim of the beanie. Sew the ends of the rectangle together using mattress stitches. Sew running stitches in the outermost stitch along the long stocking stitch side. Thread your needle with two strands of yarn. Pull carefully to close the beanie at the top. Sew firmly into place. Weave in ends.
