Knitted short cardigan

// Anna has just cast on stiches for this soft mohair cardigan. “A cosy project to potter with, which will bring warmth to late summer evenings as well as breezy winter days,” as she says.

1

The cardigan is knitted top down and back and forth on a circular knitting needle.

2

Using circular knitting needle size 8.0 mm and two strands of Anna and Clara’s mohair nylon yarn, cast on 33 (33) 33 stitches (sts).

3

Row (r) 1 (right side (RS)): Knit (k) 2, wrap the yarn around the needle (yon) (left front), k1, set a stitch marker (ssm) around this st, yon, k3, yon, k1, ssm around this st (left sleeve), yon, k19, yon (back), k1, ssm around this st, yon, k3, yon, k1, ssm around this st (right sleeve), yon, k2 (right front).

4

Wrong side (WS) rows: Work all r without increases (inc): purl (p) to end.

5

RS rows: k to end, at the same time inc with yon before and after each sm = 8 incs in all.

6

Inc 1 at each end of every 6th row: k into the back of the loop between the 1st and 2nd st on the needle and between the 2nd last and last st on the needle until the cable pattern begins. Work a total of 16 (17) 18 RS rs with incs and corresponding WS rs = 170 (180) 188 sts, incl. incs at the neck edge.

7

k23 (25) 26 sts (left front), slide 37 (39) 41 sts incl. the 2 sm onto a stitch holder (left sleeve), cast on 4 (6) 8 sts (armhole) and set 1 sm before and 1 after the 2 centre sts, k51 (53) 55 (back), slide 37 (39) 41 sts incl. the 2 sm onto a stitch holder (right sleeve), cast on 4 (6) 8 sts (armhole) and set 1 sm before and 1 sm after the 2 centre sts, k23 (25) 26 (right front). Leave the sleeve sts on the stitch holders.

8

Work one r: p to end. On RS, now decrease (dec) 1 st before and after sm: knit 2 together (k2tog). Repeat dec 3 (4) 5 times in all = 95 (103) 107 sts (NB: no dec in WS rows). Do not forget to continue neck edge shaping (inc) in every 6th row.

9

First pattern row: Inc 3 (1) 0 sts evenly so that the number of stitches is divisible by 5 + 2 sts. RS row: p3, T2L*, repeat to last 2 sts, p2. WS row: k3, T2R**, repeat to last 2 sts, k2. Repeat these 2 r. *T2L = Left twist: Knit the 2nd stitch through the back loop, then knit the first stitch and then slide both stitches off the left needle. **T2R purl = Right twist: Purl the 2nd stitch, then purl the first stitch and then slide both stitches off the left needle

10

Repeat the cable pattern rows until the cables measure 18 (20) 22 cm. Cast off from WS (p over p, k over k) except for last st, which you use for the I-cord (rouleau edge).

11

Slide the last stitch from the cast-off row onto double pointed needle size 8.0 mm. Cast on 3 sts by wrapping the yarn over the needle = 4 sts. Turn and p4. Turn the work. Now * with the right needle, pick up 1 st from the left front edge and slip this st onto the left needle. Knit this st through the back loop together with the next st on left needle, then k3. Slide all 4 sts to the other end of the left needle and pull the yarn tightly to the WS to form a rolled edge.* Repeat from * to * until you reach the top of the twisted cables on the right front. Measure out 4 buttonholes equidistant from each other. Work from * to * but without picking up sts from edge over 3 r to form a buttonhole. Start to pick up from the front edge again and make further buttonholes, etc. until you reach the lower edge of the twisted cables. Cast off and pull yarn through the last 2 sts. Weave in ends so that the I-cord (rouleau edge) rolls to the back.

12

Distribute the 37 (39) 41 sleeve sts on double-pointed knitting needles size 8.0 mm and cast on 4 (6) 8 sts (armhole). Work 35 (36) 37 cm in the round (rd), measured from the underside of the sleeve. Work 1 round and dec 4 (3) 7 sts evenly distributed in the round = 37 (42) 42 sts remaining. Now work twisted cables back and forth on the needle (switch back to circular knitting needle, if necessary). Work twisted cables 10 (12) 14 cm, or until the sleeve has the desired length. Cast off from WS. Sew the lower part of the sleeve seam. Work the second sleeve in the same way.

13

Sew together under the armholes. Weave in ends. Sew on buttons.

  • Anna and Clara’s mohair nylon yarn, 10 (10) 12 balls, each 25 g/215 m. Col 1: 10 (10) 12 balls.
  • Circular knitting needle, size 8.0 mm.
  • Double-pointed knitting needles, size 8.0 mm.
