Macramé plant hanger
"There is always room for another plant," Anna says with a smile as she hangs the macramé plant hanger from a hook in the living room. The plant hanger is also great for hanging outside, for example on a roofed terrace.
In the video, a flowerpot with a height of approx. 14 cm is used. For a flowerpot of this size, start by cutting 12 pieces of macramé yarn that are all three metres long. Split the yarn into four bundles with three pieces of yarn in both.
Lay out the four bundles so all ends align. Fold the bundles in the middle so a noose is formed on all four bundles.
Lay out the four bundles to form a square with the nooses in and the yarn ends out. Secure the nooses to each other in each side of the square to form a square knot.
Place the flowerpot and saucer on the table upside down. Attach the square knot in the middle of the saucer with two pieces of deco tape.
Now start knotting around the pot to make sure the knots are evenly dispersed and that the pot will fit into the hanger. First, split each of the four bundles of yarn in two with three pieces of yarn in each section. Now, you will knot together three yarn pieces from one bundle with three pieces from the bundle next to it. Gather the six pieces of yarn, grab the piece of yarn farthest to the right and lay it across the other five yarn pieces. Tie loose knots around the transverse piece of yarn with the other five pieces of yarn. Each knot should be tied as a noose around the transverse yarn. Finally, tie a safety knot with the two final pieces of yarn that you are holding. Continue around the flowerpot so there are four knots evenly dispersed around the flowerpot.
Again, gather three pieces of yarn from each bundle between the knots and attach them to the pot with deco tape. Now knot six pieces of yarn together in the same way as before, only this time you will make an extra row of knots. That means that in the second row, you go from the left to the right and finish off with a safety knot. Repeat all around the flowerpot until you reach the table; that is, where the top of your flowerpot is. Use deco tape to keep track of knots and yarn throughout the process.
Now you will again make sections where you gather three pieces of yarn from one knot with three pieces of yarn from the knot beside it. This time however, you will lay the pieces of yarn flat on the table and gather them with deco tape at the point where you want to make your next knot. In the video, the pieces of yarn are gathered approx. 15-17 cm away from the previous knots. Now knot together the six pieces of yarn like before. Here, you can choose to make a zigzag pattern by continuing to increase the distance from the knot in the row above and continuing as you knot your way back the other way.
Remove all pieces of deco tape. Flip the flowerpot and check if it hangs even when you lift up the plant hanger with the flowerpot inside. If not, you can adjust the four yarn bundles.
When you have decided on a suitable length, you can gather all the pieces of yarn with deco tape before folding the entire collected bundle of yarn around a wooden ring.
Make a large, loose noose with a new piece of yarn of approx. 30-40 cm. Hold the entire collected bundle of yarn securely and place the loose noose on top of the joint in your hand. The noose should have a long end and a short end. The noose should be towards the pot and the ends towards the wooden ring. Hold the middle of the loose noose tight to the yarn bundle and twist the long end of the noose yarn tightly around the bundle several times. Make sure the noose and the other end of the string in the opposite side of the twist continue to be showing.
When you have 5-7 cm left of the yarn, which you are twisting around the yarn bundle, drag the end of the yarn through the loose noose. Now grab the other end of the yarn which is sticking out on top of the twists. Pull the string to make the noose disappear into the twists. You can continue in this way with the rest of the yarn ends and make small and bigger tassels at the top under the ring to make a nice closure at the top.
Place the pot in the plant hanger while it rests on the table and plant your favourite plant in the flowerpot. You can now hang the plant hanger.
