Make a macramé candy cane
Make this year’s Christmas decorations extra special with small creative projects that warm hearts of all ages. Anna’s handmade candy cane in macramé yarn is a delightful addition to the Christmas tree – and a hit with both young and old.
Cut off two pieces of macramé yarn in red and white respectively, each measuring approximately 150 cm in length.
Place the two pieces of macramé yarn flat on the table so they form a cross at the centre. In Anna’s example, the red yarn lies horizontally at the bottom, while the white yarn is placed vertically on top.
Now it is time to tie a Chinese knot. Take one end of the red macramé yarn from the left side, and place it over the white yarn, so that both ends of the red yarn point to the right.
Next, take one end of the white macramé yarn from above, and place it over both red yarn ends on the right side, so that both ends of the white yarn point downwards.
Now take the lower of the two red yarn ends, and place it over both white yarn ends, so that the red yarn forms the shape of an 'S'.
Finally, take the white yarn end furthest to the left, and bring it up over the lower and middle parts of the red "S", then under the upper red yarn. Now the yarns are intertwined like a little window. Place a finger in the centre of the "window" at the crossing point, and tighten the yarn ends until a knot is formed.
Repeat steps 3–6 until you have tied two to three knots.
Use side-cutting pliers to snip a piece of metal wire slightly shorter than you want the candy cane to be. “Feel free to fold the wire a couple of times for added stability,” Clara kindly adds.
Now continue tying knots around the metal wire until it is completely covered. Make sure the knots are tightened evenly all the way along for a consistent result.
When the candy cane has reached the desired length, trim the yarn ends and thread them into the work using a darning needle, so they are neatly hidden.
Gently bend the candy cane into the desired shape. Now your candy cane is ready to spread Christmas cheer throughout the home.
