Make a sunrise linocut

Inspired by the beautiful sunrise the sisters enjoyed during their morning walk on the beach, Anna carefully cuts out sunbeams and waves on the lino board. "This way, we can capture the beautiful moment, dear sister," she says to Clara.

1

Download and print the template and cut out the small template. Mark all the black lines on the template with a pencil. Anna recommends using a 4B pencil.

2

Place the template with the markings on top of the lino board, here, Anna uses one sized A5. Let the motif align with the sides of the sheet while you transfer the pencil lines to the lino board with the printing tool. If necessary, you can make the lines clearer using a pencil.

3

Use a precision knife to cut the lino board into two pieces by following the wavy line just beneath the sun.

4

Now, carve out the motif using the linocut tools. In the video, Anna has primarily used the tool with the V-shaped end to carve out the sunbeams and waves.

5

If you wish to create a passe-partout detail around the linocut, then mark the area with decorative tape on a sheet of card stock. Here, Anna uses an A4-sized sheet.

6

Create colour variants by mixing white linoleum paint with your desired colours. Feel free to use a piece of recycled cardboard as a base. Do make a few try-outs before you start pressing down on the paper. It can be a good idea to practice a little to find out how much paint needs to be rolled onto the lino board before you press the motif onto the final sheet of paper.

7

To make the sun, you can place 1-2 strokes of white paint and then a stroke of yellow paint on a piece of cardboard. Now, roll on top of the colour so that one end of the rubber paint roller is slightly white, and the other end is completely yellow. Roll the colour onto the sun lino board and place the board onto the card stock slightly higher than the tape marking to create some spacing between the two prints.

8

To create the sea, you can place two vertical strokes of blue paint and then place a white stroke in the middle. Position the roller with the white stroke in the middle and roll a few times to distribute the colour. Next, roll vertically down on the sea, so a lighter blue tone is placed in the middle of the print. Now, place this print under the sun lino board.

9

Carefully remove both lino boards and let the sunrise motif come to life. Sign your new lovely linocut and let it decorate your home.
