Make your own costume wings

"These whimsical wings will let the imagination and creative play take flight," Anna says with a smile, as she prepares to make a set for her nieces' dress-up collection.

1

Begin by gently bending the metal rings back and forth at the soldered joints until they open. Then, shape two large rings for the tops of the wings and likewise two small rings for the bottoms of the wings.

2

The arches that shape the wings, as well as the bend that forms the tips of the wings, can be shaped by hand. "However, to straighten the ends properly, a pair of pliers should be used to ensure a good grip," Clara emphasises."

3

Bind each pair of wings together with wire, which you wrap around until the parts are securely attached.

4

Now cut small pieces of felt to cover the joints, ensuring there are no loose or sharp ends when the wings are finished. Then, attach the felt with a glue gun, which also secures the wings at the centre.

5

Cut two pieces of tulle measuring approx. 50 x 70 cm., and fold each piece over the middle of the short side. Sit down comfortably in front of the sewing machine, and sew the sides together, so you have two bags.

6

Next, the edge of the bag must be folded over so you can sew a casing. "Just remember that the opening should be in the middle of a long side and not at the seams," Clara reminds. Then, attach embroidery thread to a safety pin, after which it is threaded all the way through the casings."

7

Now turn each tulle cover so that the inside faces inward, and pull them over the wings. The cover is now tied as shown in the video. Do not worry about whether your cover fits neatly around the joints on the back, as these will be covered in the upcoming steps.

8

Print the template with the small wings. Then cut them out in cardboard, and attach them to the front of the fairy wings with a glue gun. Next, cut the elastic band, tie a knot at the end of the band, and secure it to the back with glue.

9

Print the template for the butterfly wings, and then cut out two of each template in felt. Assemble the front and back, and attach them with glue. Next, form two antennae from pipe cleaners, and mount these in the centre of the wings as shown in the video.

10

Adorn your fairy wings with stones and glitter glue as shown in the video. "Or let your creativity and imagination run free with glitter paint, sequin ribbon along the edge, or other beautiful products," Anna smiles. If you wish to attach decorations directly to the tulle, a glue gun can be used advantageously. The butterfly wings are now ready for imaginative playtimes."
