Make your own kaleidoscope
"Wow, it looks so lovely," the nephew bursts out as soon as he puts his eye to the kaleidoscope. Together with his Auntie Anna, he has made his own kaleidoscope by using just a few household items. "And with a dash of kreativity," Anna smiles.
With a ruler and marker, mark the length of the paper towel roll on a piece of metallic cardboard. If you do not have metallic cardboard, you can glue tin foil to a piece of cardboard with a glue stick.
Now, mark further 2 cm under the line, which marks the length of the roll, so your metallic cardboard piece will be 2 cm shorter than the roll. Cut off the excess metallic cardboard and save it for later.
Measure the inside diameter of the roll, flip your metallic cardboard so it lays horisontally, and mark the measurements of the diameter with a ruler and marker, so you can fold the cardboard after these measurements.
Fold the cardboard three times in this width. Cut off excessive cardboard, so you are left with four folds.
Put double-sided adhesive tape on the parts of the cardboard that are not metallic and which are the two long sides of the paper. Now, fold the cardboard so it makes a triangle. The metallic side is to be the inside of the triangle. Stick this together with the double-sided adhesive tape.
Draw two circles on your see-through plastic using the roll. The first circle should be cut 1 mm within the line, because it needs to fit inside the roll. The other circle should be cut on the line as it should be glued onto one end of the roll.
Put the the metallic triangle in the roll, so one end aligns with the bottom of the roll.
Put the smaller plastic circle into the roll on top of the triangle. Glue the circle inside the roll by adding glue along its edge with a gluegun.
Now, pour beads in the roll on top of the circle. There should be enough room so the beads can move around, so only fill it 2/3 up.
Glue the other circle onto the outside of the roll, so the beads are enclosed in this little space.
Decorate the kaleidoscope with design paper and deco tape as you wish to.
Find you metallic cardboard again. Draw another circle which fits the roll's diameter and cut this out. Make a hole in the middle of this circle with your rotary puncher. Glue this circle on to the end of the roll which is opposite from the end with the beads.
If you want, you can finish off with decorative tape like in the video. Here, the tape is added to both ends of the roll, so about 1/3 of the tape is over the edges and can be bent down over the joints.
