Mushroom costume of recycled cardboard
"A great idea for a lovely and fun costume," Clara says about the mushroom hat which Anna is making for the nephew.
Cut long strips of recycled paper to a width of approx. 3-5 cm.
Use one of the long strips to measure the child's head. Remember to put a finger underneath the strip to make a little extra room for the head. Cut off the excess cardboard, and glue it together to form a band.
Now take some of the narrowest strips and glue them across the band to create the shape of a hat.
Place the hat on a large piece of cardboard and draw a circle around the hat and also mark the centre. Draw another circle inside the hat approx. 2 cm from the first circle, and draw small notches all the way around.
Make your own compass by tying a pen to a string. Keep the string anchored to the mark at the centre of the hat, and draw a large circle around the hat in the size you desire for the mushroom.
Cut out the big circle and the little circle inside. Also cut all the notches so they can be folded.
Fold and glue the notches to the inside of the hat. Now, the hat has a wide brim.
Turn the hat around, and glue strips from the edge of the brim to the top of the hat.
Carefully stretch out one side of the white crepe paper with a flat hand. Turn the hat over, and glue the crepe paper onto the bottom of the brim as shown in the video.
Turn the hat over and fill the space between the brim and the top of the hat with crumpled paper.
Now stretch one side out on the red crepe paper and glue it onto the top of the hat.
Cut out white cardboard circles in different sizes. Use glue to attach these to the hat randomly to make it look like a mushroom.
Once again, turn the hat over and use glue to attach a wide ribbon to each side of the hat so that you can help the child tie a knot. Dress the child in white or beige clothes to complete the costume.
