Paint a watercolour flower

Anna finds flowers to be a motif she can paint over and over again. "Each flower is unique," she says.

1

Sketch the flower with a pencil or watercolour pencil.

2

It is a good idea to have a piece of paper towel nearby. You can use this to soak up water from the paint brush while painting if it has become too wet.

3

Mix the watercolours in a palette tray. Mix dark colours to start with, since they can easily be diluted with water when you need a lighter colour.

4

Now, paint the flower. Start with the lightest colours, that is colours diluted with water. You could use a water brush that automatically adds water while you paint. You could also test the colours on an extra piece of watercolour paper on the side as you go to make sure the nuances are right.

5

Add more and more colour. If you want the colours to mix, add the colours quickly after each other so the last colour reacts to the previous colour. If you want to keep the colours separate, wait to add the new colour until the first colour is dry.

6

Gradually build the details of the flower by adding more and more colour.

7

Paint the final details of the flower with dark colours with a small brush.
