Patchwork elf's hat

Start by measuring the circumference of the head that will wear the elf's hat.

Divide the circumference with two and add 5 cm. I.e. if the head measurement is 50 cm, the equation will look like this: 50/2= 25+5 = 30 cm. This leaves 1 cm for seam allowance and a little extra for the width, as you will add an elastic in the hem. Now, cut two pieces of patchwork fabric in this width and in the desired length of the hat plus 1.5 cm and the width of the elastic. Again, this will leave room for 1 cm seam allowance and 0.5 cm extra room for the elastic.

Fold both pieces of fabric in the middle and cut them to a point from approx. 15-20 cm into the fabric as shown in the video.

Put the pieces on top of each other rightside to rightside, so they are aligned and sew the sides together with a 1 cm seam allowance. When you have sewn the top of the hat, you can cut off the corners of excess fabric.

Fold the hat the same number of centimetres as the width of your elastic plus 1.5 cm. Sew around the hem with 1 cm seam allowance, as shown in the video. Splitting the seams to each side while sewing over them can be a good idea.

Cut the elastic in the same lenght as the head measurement and add 2 cm for seam allowance.

On the inside of the hat, cut a little notch in the folded hem, so the elastic can be led trough here. Attach a safety pin to the end of the elastic and lead it all the way through the hem until both ends of the elastic meet. Sew the elastic shut with 1 cm seam allowance. Optionally, cut off some of the excess elastic.

Cut out the template in cardboard and make a pom pon as shown in the video.

Sew the pom pon on the tip of the hat. Now it is ready for wearing.
