Sew your own sleeping mask
Let your nights be calm with a homemade sleeping mask or use it when you need a little rest when travelling. If you have leftover fabric from other sewing projects, you can easily use it for this lovely sleeping mask, Anna believes. Simply follow the sisters' guide.
Download and print out the template. Then cut out the larger pattern in your chosen fabric twice. Cut out a piece of the padding following the smaller pattern.
Cut out a 6 x 55 cm strip of fabric. Afterwards, cut a piece of flat elastic cord with a length of approximately 34 cm depending on the measurements of your head.
Fold your strip of fabric right side together lengthwise down the middle, and secure the fold with pins along the edge. Sew the edge with a 1 cm seam allowance.
Turn the fabric tube inside out by attaching a safety pin in one end of the tube and using the pin to push the fabric into itself as demonstrated in the video.
Attach a safety pin in one end of the piece of elastic cord, and pull the elastic through the hole of the fabric tube. Then sew the ends together on both sides to ensure that the elastic cord stays in place.
Place one of the cut-out fabric pieces with the right side up, and place the finished elastic strap approximately 0.5 cm from the edge of the fabric on each side. Sew the strap onto both sides. "You can fold the mask fabric down the middle and make a small cut on each side of the fold to make a guide for placing the strap evenly," Anna suggests.
Place the other piece of fabric with the right side down towards the right side of the first piece of fabric, so that the pieces are right against right. Fasten the two pieces of fabric with pins all around.
Sew the sleeping mask together along the hem with 1 cm seam allowance. Remember to let approximately 8 cm remain open at the top of the sleeping mask.
Make small cuts along the seam allowance to ensure a lovely finished result. Turn the sleeping mask inside out so the right sides face outwards.
Fill your sleeping mask with your chosen padding and distribute it evenly in the mask using a bone folder. "If you do not have a bone folder, you can use a similarly shaped tool such as a ruler," Clara smiles.
Close the top of the sleeping mask by folding the seam allowance into the padding hole, and sew the mask together closely to the edge. Your sleeping mask is now ready to use.
