Tie dye tote bag

Anna is full of excitement as she places the tie-dye colours with the tote bag into the plastic bag. 12 hours later, the colourful result will finally be revealed. “All kinds of fabric materials can be tie dyed. Tote bags, tea towels, cloth nappies, t-shirts – the possibilities are endless,” Anna says.

1

Soak the tote bag in a tub of water.

2

Fold your fabric in the desired shape. Anna has folded the fabric in the shape of a triangle.

3

Cut two identical pieces of cardboard in the same shape as your folded fabric and place the pieces on the front and back of the folded piece of fabric. Secure with two rubber bands.

4

Put on the gloves and pour water into the bottle of your preferred colour. Shake the bottle well, so the dye is evenly mixed inside the bottle.

5

Pour a little colour into a tub. Make sure to choose a tub that is okay to absorb a little colour, as the tie dye can be difficult to completely remove from surfaces afterwards.

6

Dip all edges of your folded shape directly into the dye, one edge at the time.

7

To make sure the edges absorb enough colour, you can splash a little extra dye on the edges with the spout of the bottle. Be careful not to use too much, as any excess dye can drizzle into the middle of the shape, thus losing the variety of the tie dye pattern.

8

Place your fabric in a plastic bag and leave for at least 12 hours.

9

Rinse out the dye with cold water and wash the fabric in the washing machine alone. Afterwards, run a wash with nothing in the machine to make sure the dye is completely rinsed out of the machine.

10

Anna has used the folding method. You can also tie dye fabric using the twist method. Here, instead of folding, you twist the fabric in small or bigger knots and secure the knots with rubber bands before dying the fabric with the spout of the bottle.
