Personal art. The most eye-catching element in Lotte Louise's living room is the big gallery wall filled with her own art and lovely colours.
Lotte Louise Simonsen 07
Repetition. Currently, Lotte Louise likes to paint motifs with repetition in them, like this painting with three figures.

How would you describe yourself as an artist?

You can tell from my art that I am very indecisive. I want to create something realistic, but at the same time I want it to be abstract. I like a lot of different styles and when the trends shift, I want to have a go at whatever is new. I have worked as a scientist within biomedicine. Curiosity is what drove me as a scientist and it is also the drive behind my art. I want a little something of everything in my life. Science is also apparent in my art, and really, I probably see myself more as a scientist who makes art rather than as an artist.
Lotte Louise Simonsen 09
Einstein. The Einstein painting is Lotte Louise's favourite painting because it combines the art with science. She painted it some years back.
Lotte Louise Simonsen 08
Art with movement. Repetition, movement - and purple clogs - characterise Lotte Louise's latest piece.

What role does art play in your home?

I feel at home when I am surrounded by my art. The first thing I do when I move in somewhere new is setting up my big gallery wall which consists of 90 percent my own art. Colours affect me. Beauty affects me. It takes a lot of energy for me to be in an ugly room. That is why it is so important that I can take over a room as my own and make it decorative and cosy. You shouldn't undermine beautiful surroundings. Looking at something you find beautiful can lift the levels of happiness hormones in your brain the same way as sunlight. At the same time, I am constantly evolving as an artist, and for this reason I need to cover a whole wall in paintings to display my wide taste, what I am proud of, and how I have evolved.

A spot in the sun. The favourite spot in the living room is the round bay window with the beautiful lighting. Lotte Louise has painted the wall around the windows of the bay window pink. It matches the surrounding art beautifully.
Lotte Louise Simonsen 06
Personal mix. Most of the art on the wall is created by Lotte Louise, but she also likes to include pieces by other artists, such as the two collages in the middle.

How has your art evolved?

Previously, I painted a lot based on a feeling of pain. I was searching for something. My art was characterised by dark brownish colours and structures, and I was heavily inspired by the sound universes of Mew, Kashmir and Kent. "Sad rock," you might call it. Today, I paint in light colours and strokes. I paint what makes me happy. Now, people are almost always present in my paintings. I have not been able to work for 10 years because of repercussions of a stroke. I very much wish I could work and be surrounded by colleagues every day. But when I paint people, it kind of feels like having a friend in the room with me.

Studio. Recently, Lotte Louise set up a lille art workroom in her home. A place with lovely light to paint by and room for big canvases.

Creative process. Several paintings are kept in the little workroom. Lotte Louise often paints over paintings if she is not completely happy with it and she has a new idea.

Gather your art in one place, for instance one big wall. It creates a contrast between the calm and the loud.

Hang your paintings to create contrasts. For instance between posh and everyday. Beautiful and ugly. Things shouldn't match too much.

Be brave, and follow your intuition. Dare to choose the things you like. Remember; everything fashionable becomes unfashionable again. Instead, choose the things that make you happy and make you feel something.

Lay your paintings on the floor when you are starting to create a gallery wall. Measure the length from floor to ceiling so you can test the layout.
