Abstract. White porcelain is the perfect canvas for abstract patterns.

Colourful icons and lines. Start by experimenting a bit with shapes and forms on a piece of paper before painting on your ceramic item.

Neat or dynamic. On the candlestick, the lines are neatly painted to follow the shape of the item. On the organically shaped vase, however, the icons and lines are placed in a more dynamic fashion. It is great if it looks a bit handmade and imperfect.

Monochrome lines. With a monochrome colour choice, an abstract pattern becomes calm and harmonic.

Practice. Take the time to practice making patterns with some sort of repetition in the same colour. It seems simple, but it can make quite an impact.

Tip. The bent paintbrush is especially good at reaching the areas that are hard to reach with a normal paintbrush.

Porcelain marker. Porcelain markers are easy to work with and great at creating a uniform line in the repeated pattern.

Visit second-hand stores or look in your cabinets for ceramic and glass items that need a bit of renewal.

New brush strokes. Explore your paintbrush collection. Brushes you may not normally use can be fantastic tools for trying new textures or patterns.

Fan paintbrush. This paintbrush is fantastic at making dynamic brush strokes with great impact.

Plate art. Let the children express themselves in colour on an old plate, and hang it on the wall as a piece of beautiful, colourful art. Use paint for porcelain. Kindly note that you should not use painted plates for food.

Brush work. When it comes to botanical patterns, you can often let your paintbrushes do a lot of the work. Pointy or rounded paintbrushes can make the outline of a leaf by a simple dab in the paint and directly on to the vase.

Contour drawing. Use a black marker to create more details and make the flowers even more detailed.

Glass flowers. Paint wine glasses as lovely flowers. Start by painting the yellow center of the flower at the bottom of the glass. Paint on the outside of the glass, not inside. Then, paint the petals of the flower. Finally, paint the stem green.

Floral dreams. The poppies are painted with random strokes of red glass paint. Leaves and green buds are added in green paint, before the stamens are painted in black glass and porcelain marker. You can also make a print of little flowers by making white dots randomly around the glass. Then, make petals with a blue marker and add little green leaves.

A quirky mug. A display of quirky, colourful mugs is a great detail in the home. With ceramic paint, you can make the mugs yourself. Leave the top part of the mug where the mug meets your mouth free of paint.

The easy flower. Make easy flowers with cotton buds.

Smiley mug. Cut a round stamp from a kitchen sponge and make classic yellow round heads on the mug. Here, a second-hand mug with a coloured brim is used.

Marker details. Add the final smiling touches to the mug with a black marker. Glass and porcelain markers are great for details, but can also be used to paint bigger surfaces with great precision. A bit of gold paint does wonders on a handle.

Tape pattern. Use decorative tape to paint stripes on the mug. Wait until the stripes are dry, and then you can add more stripes in the other direction if you like.
