"Blomstervang". Summer 2024 is the third season of local flower sales at "Blomstervang", but it is also the year when Theresa hopes to influence even more people with the joy of gardening and bouquet making through workshops.

The first sprout

The first seed of Theresa's flower adventure was sown when she and a friend attended a workshop held by another florist about five years ago. "It was a completely magical and beautiful day, and actually the first evening I was out of the house without my child after maternity leave. When I got home, I told my husband Thomas that this was just it, this was what I wanted," describes Theresa, who experienced a particular joy among the flowers during her visit. At that time, Theresa was at a crossroads after her maternity leave, not planning to return to her previous job, and it was during this special visit that a strong desire to live out her dream and create her own business arose. In 2021, Theresa became self-employed with Blomstervang, and since then, the development of the floristry in her backyard has accelerated. From there, Theresa sells homegrown bouquets and holds workshops in the summer, where she takes great pleasure in conveying and passing on her passion and inspiring others to cultivate their own flower gardens.

An extra room. In the summer, the garden is like an extra room for Theresa and her family, who have furnished the back of the garden with a shelter, fire pit, and terrace with space to relax in the hammock.

Bridal bouquet

Before Theresa was to marry her husband, she struggled to find the right bridal bouquet. Throughout the wedding planning phase, she was already captured by her love for gardening, and her passion for flowers was blooming. Hence, it became clear to Theresa that she should grow her own bridal bouquet. "A whole new world opened up from a tiny seed to a plethora of flowers. I sowed many flowers in January and we got married in September. On the special day, I picked the best I could find in the garden, based on the colour theme I had in my mind. I also arranged the flower decorations myself. And then the actual party was held at home in the garden," Theresa recounts the big day. In many ways, the bridal bouquet became an essential part of the kickoff to Blomstervang, from where everything truly took off and Theresa decided to dive into it. Bridal bouquets are also the type of bouquet that Theresa finds most beautiful and takes great pleasure in making special. "I spend a lot of time assembling the bouquet, and although I can never promise a specific flower, I can always guarantee that you will get the very best that I have in the garden on the day," she says about the vibrant bouquets she offers, in both classic but especially wild and natural looks, which are very characteristic of Theresa's style.

Sprout joy and garden delight

For Theresa, the joy of anticipation and the happiness of watching seeds sprout and grow into large and magnificent flowers are some of the best feelings. "It's amazing to experience, when something I have sown comes to life – to plant a seed that later becomes a small plant, which I then put in the garden, care for, and water, and suddenly it bursts into bloom and flourishes. Sometimes it even surprises me how quickly a tiny seed can develop," Theresa shares. "At the same time, it's inherent that the flowers are constantly developing, and I usually say that each new year becomes the best year – because it does," Theresa says with a twinkle in her eye, her statement also reflecting the journey and development that has taken place in the garden year after year. In addition to the feeling of happiness Theresa gets from leaving her mark, as she does by creating beautiful flowers and bouquets, the garden is also a special sanctuary where she can find peace and be present in the moment. "The soil forms happiness, and with hands in the soil, all kinds of mental clutter and busyness disappear," Theresa explains while she looks out over the blooming perennial beds.

From sprout to bouquet

At Blomstervang, the gardening year begins in January. "At the beginning of the year, flower dreams blossom in my head and I spend a lot of time finding inspiration, buying seeds, and making plans, such as how many plants and stems there is room for," Theresa says. "Later it's time for sowing – the timing varies greatly from seed to seed and depending on the type of seed, some need to be placed on top of the soil, some lightly covered and some buried. Once this is done, I keep an eye on the seeds continuously and see if they have sprouted. When that happens, I count myself very lucky!" Theresa explains with unmistakable enthusiasm. The journey from sprout to bouquet continues after the sprout is born: "I typically keep the small plants indoors under grow lights, and depending on the type, I slowly get the plant used to the outdoor life by moving it outside regularly. When the time comes for the plant to be planted in the garden, most of the time is spent watering and looking at it every day and looking forward to flowering. And when that happens, it's definitely worth it," says Theresa. The composition of the flowers for wild and exuberant bouquets is created as Theresa walks around the garden: "I can't pick a bouquet in five minutes. I spend a lot of time walking around the garden for inspiration. I've also chosen to design the garden so that it invites you to explore – every walk is a whole little journey and I always take my time."

Garden therapy. In the garden, Theresa finds peace, presence, and focus, and she is happy to wake up at 4 or 5 in the morning during the summer months to pick her bouquets as the sun rises.

Everyone can grow beautiful flowers

For Theresa, it is an important mission to pass on the joy of gardening to others, not least to her two sons, who have been given their own little plot in the garden. "Anyone can grow beautiful flowers. And I think it would be absolutely wonderful if even more people could be inspired to cultivate their own gardens and grow something more diverse and vibrant than the many lawns we see around," Theresa says with a smile. "It doesn't have to be a large project that you embark on. I would actually recommend starting small, perhaps with a little bed, and then you can always try a bit more year after year." In her world of flowers on Instagram (@blomstervang), Theresa shares a wealth of tips and tricks, inspiration, and great ideas for garden design, as well as timely advice now and then on when it's time to sow different flowers.

Welcome. "One should be able to see that someone who cares about their garden lives here," Theresa explains about her new gate at the front garden, which, in her eyes, fits her style perfectly.

First and foremost, Theresa recommends ensuring that you have good soil: "It can be advantageous to start by cultivating the soil, because with good, nutrient-rich soil, you also get healthy flowers. Moreover, it is a good idea to consider where you are placing your bed. Summer flowers need as much sun as possible, so a south-facing location is ideal."

If you want to make it as easy as possible, Theresa suggests skipping the pre-sprouting and simply sowing flower seeds directly onto the soil in May using a seed type suited for this purpose. "Usually, you can find this information on the seed packet, and it's a good idea to buy your seeds from a place that provides good guidance."

Just dive into it, Theresa says encouragingly: "You do not need to overthink or plan too much. Simply sow the seeds in good soil and wait to experience the joy of sprouting."
DSC6314
Dreams and plans. Theresa hopes to make a living from her passion, and above all, she dreams of inspiring many more to grow their own flowers and create a paradise no matter where they live. She believes it is certainly not impossible: "Even the smallest gardens can hold big dreams."
